Waverley Don Cavalier// A Black Hanoverian Gelding.
About
Our lovely Don Cavalier, a striking 4 year old gelding, was sold to the United States in November. He has three good paces and an affectionate and brave temperament. He is by the spectacular black stallion Don Crusador and out of an Elite Cheenook/Wenzel I mare. As he is a large and statuesque horse, with big powerful paces, and was still growing as a three year old, we did not back him until he was four. He is now under saddle and proving highly trainable. His full brother, Dark Knight, was the undisputed 2009 Champion of the three year old stallions at the Bundeschampionat in Warendorf, where he won both the qualifying round and the final with a rideability score of 9.38; a score of 9.50 for attitude to work, character, temperament and constitution; 8.88 for canter; 9.50 for trot (test rider gave a perfect 10); and 8.31 for his walk. He now stands in Sweden.
Sire, Don Crusador, was the Champion of his Stallion Licensing in Verden in 2000 and a real favourite with the judges. Descending out of Larissa, a Lauries Crusador x Pik Bube I mare, he came 3rd in the dressage portion of his 300 day test at Adelheidsdorf in 2001 with a dressage index of 133.06 and came 6th overall.
Don Cavalier's Dam is by the very expressive Holsteiner stallion Cheenook, who bred show jumping as well as dressage licensed sons and who was trained to Grand Prix level in dressage. He had outstanding basic gaits with flamboyant knee action, fabulous hind leg and suspension, and displayed exceptional Piaffe and Passage movements. He is known for passing on his kind temperament and type.
Don Cavalier’s great grandparents include Donnerhall, Lauries Crusador, Caretino and Wenzel 1.
There are not many stallions that have been as successful as Wenzel 1, with an incredible 612 registered competition horses in Germany alone, winning more than DM880,000 and almost all that in the dressage arena. On the world breeding index in 2001 he had 7 international competitors (at World and European level) listed, and he held no less than 10th rank during the long period 1992-2001. He was the winner of his performance test in 1979, became the best stallion of 1980 and was the 1982 reserve champion at the DLG. In Hanover alone he left 1,208 progeny, including 350 broodmares, 68 of them state premium mares, and at elite auctions he was represented by 80 offspring.
Lauries Crusador, the Hanoverian Stallion of the Year in 2006, has had a considerable refining influence on the Hanoverian breed, with more than 103 State Premium mares, 39 licensed sons (13 of them being registered into the premium stallion register), and 546 registered competition horses to his name.
